Roy Sargeant co-produced the movie of his play The Road to Mecca and during the filming, master playwright Athol Fugard, chatted about playwriting. There was the cutest prop being used. An old 1950s fountain pen. Fugard was delighted with it and said, grasping it with affection, “I’m telling you there is a play in this pen.” Sargeant told us that Fugard still (in 1991) wrote the first drafts of all his play with pen and ink. “I asked Fugard why he hadn’t elaborated his career as a writer and taken up screenplay writing?” He replied solemnly, “No. I think I understand about playwriting, I know which chisel to pick up, which hammer to use. I‘ll stick to playwriting.” “I loved that remark,” Sargeant said, “stressing the craft of playwriting. And then this, Fugard argued that secrets are most important in the plotting of his plays. That one crucial secret, planted, expanded as the plot advances and at the climax of the play explodes with terrific force.”

Now should you wish to write plays Siyasanga Cape Town Theatre Company will be presenting a Beginners’ Playwriting Workshop at Artscape on Saturday 15, Sunday 16 and Saturday 22 July 2017.
Roy Sargeant leads the Workshop which takes delegates through all the key technical and creative aspects of writing a play for professional production. The Workshop also includes writing exercises, a Power Point presentation and showings of three famous plays as examples of great playwriting. One of these is Fugard’s "MASTER HAROLD"…and the Boys. There is no charge for the Workshop.
Only ten delegates will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis and only successful applicants will receive communications from Siyasanga.
