What is the Schreiner Karoo Writers Festival?
The Schreiner Karoo Writers Festival is an annual literary celebration held in Cradock, South Africa, featuring Writers, mainly from the Karoo. Evening gatherings often include dinner-theatre performances, fireside chats, and open mic sessions, complemented by hearty Karoo cuisine and warm hospitality.
It is not to be confused with the Etienne van Heerden Veldsoirée.
The Schreiner Karoo Writers Festival honours the legacy of Olive Schreiner, who lived in Cradock, and is the renowned author of The story of an African farm. She was South Africa’s first notable novelist and a trailblazing feminist and social reformer. Set against the evocative backdrop of the beautiful Karoo, the festival offers an enjoyable and immersive experience of theatre performances, fireside storytelling, writing, culture, and community.
Educational outreach is a key component of the Festival, with initiatives like the AVBOB Poetry Project and AMAZWI Outreach. These programmes aim to nurture young voices and promote the love of reading and writing.
