On Sunday, 20 August 2017 the ATKV joined hands with Mizan Events & Cultural Promotions for an event to celebrate the Cape Muslim community and their deep cultural and religious roots.

Afrikaans was first written in Arabic script by Cape Muslim scholars.

Tourists know the Bo-Kaap for its colourful houses, but what happens inside those homes?

Masturah Adams, the owner and manager of Mizan Events & Cultural Promotions, wants South Africans and international tourists to celebrate our cultural and religious heritage with Cape Malay cuisine. She calls the Bo-Kaap a “celebratory community”.

Adams rounded up family and friends to create an interactive display of the Cape Muslim traditions. Visitors were then taken on a guided tour.

’n Madrassa is ’n skool waar mense oor hul geloof leer.

We were allowed to take a peek into a typical madrassa. A madrassa is a school where people learn about their faith.

The naming ceremony of a child, called the “doekmal”, was explained.

Verskeie aspekte van die huwelikseremonie is verduidelik.

Various aspects of the wedding ceremony were explained.

After the formal ceremony, the older women, normally Hajies, prepare the bride for her new status as a married woman with something warm to wear, many blessings and lots of tears. (A Hajie is someone who has visit Mecca as a pilgrim.)

From here the young bride is serenaded to her bridal chamber by the guests.

We heard about the preparations for Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca.

We could see the tables laid out to celebrate the return of the pilgrims and could savour some of the treats.

We heard about the month of Ramadan when the Muslim community fasts from sunrise to sunset, and were shown the table settings for Eid-ul-Fitr, the celebration when the fast ends.

We were given a brief overview of other important events on the Muslim calendar.

One of these is “rampies sny” – the cutting of orange or lemon leaves in preparation for Moulood-un-Nabi, when the birth of the Prophet Mohammed is celebrated. (Click here for more photographs of  Moulood.)

Quite appropriately we were also shown the last passage of the human body – the deceased person is lovingly prepared for the grave.

Finally we were invited to marvel at the beauty of the Bo-Kaap.

We were given an overview of the history of the Bo-Kaap and the challenges currently faced by the people who live there.

On hand, to answer questions, were two seasoned cultural guides, Shireen Nackerdien and Mogamat Kammie Kamedien.

Lunch was about to be served, so it was time for a few quick photographs. Seen here are Sandra Prinsloo, the actress, Deidre le Hanie, managing director of the ATKV, and Anroux Marais, minister of sport and culture in the Western Cape.

Then were were invited to experience Cape Malay cuisine at its finest, like this breyani.

En nog baie meer!

And much more!

The knives and forks did the talking.

Yazeed Kamaldien captured the event on his camera. He is a celebrated journalist who shot to fame with his sensitive and in-depth coverage of the Arab Spring.

Die komediant Waseef Piekaan was volgende.

Next up was the comedian Waseef Piekaan.

Nagereg is bedien.

Dessert was served.

“We have so much to learn from one another! We have so much to celebrate,” said Deidre le Hanie while she thanked Masturah Adams for the day. Adams says she is keen to have events like these on a regular basis where groups of people can enjoy a celebratory community experience while savouring Cape Malay cuisine.
