Take storytellers, authors, academics, historians and activists; mix in the smell of a Karoo fire, the tinkling of silver on dining tables dressed in white, and a few dogs, and you have summarised the Etienne van Heerden Veldsoirée taking place in Cradock from 23 to 25 September 2022.
Some of the discussions will pack a punch:
- Mphuthumi Ntabeni looks at Xhosa literary traditions before the arrival of the colonial lens.
- Amos Nteta, Freek Robinson and Xolile Dwili Vusubuntu will remind us about the importance of the Cradock Four.
- Freek Robinson, Barend la Grange and Heindrich Wyngaard will express opinions about the position of civil society in our communities.
- Christi van der Westhuizen will discuss whiteness.
- Tony Jackman, Freda Froehlick, Clinton V du Plessis, Darryl David, Chris Marais, Julienne du Toit, Theresa Hardman, Jo Els, Jean Meiring and Doreen Atkinson will anchor our discourse with narratives of the Karoo.
- Etienne van Heerden himself will be there to launch A library to flee, a novel set in Cape Town, Shanghai, Beijing and, of course, the enigmatic Karoo.
- Other authors include Elise Bishop, Heilna du Plooy, Henrietta Rose-Innes, Loit Sōls, Marnus Hattingh, Sidney Gilroy and Hennie van Coller.
