South African feature film, Stiekyt from writer/director Etienne Fourie will have its International Premiere at this year’s PÖFF | Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia.
Started in 1997, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival has grown into one of the biggest film festivals in the world and sees an attendance of 80 000 people annually. Previous PÖFF films include 2018’s Best Picture Oscar winner Green Book, as well as The Father, starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. This year the festival will take place from 11 to 27 November.
For PÖFF’s official announcement, Stiekyt is described as: “Writer/director Etienne Fourie has crafted a dark comedy that is all at once quite odd, intensely personal and hugely entertaining. This international premiere has a bit of everything: mysterious deaths, wounded relationships and, perhaps most eye-catchingly, spectacular drag performances.”
Stiekyt is the story of an actor, James (played by Paul du Toit) who secretly moonlights at a failing drag club. Here, he has to fight for his marriage after being caught red-handed by his wife, as well as deliver the performance of his life to avert suspicion regarding the mysterious death of a colleague.
“I was blown away by the news!” says Fourie when asked about the selection. “The film’s warm reception is truly lovely and humbling. Stiekyt is more personal than anything else I’ve ever done and there’s a real sense of ownership in that. I had the opportunity to make something that was unashamedly odd, unapologetically itself, totally personal. In many ways, Stiekyt is a kind of coming-out for me, both personally and as a filmmaker. I can’t wait to share it with international audiences.”
PÖFF Festival Programmer, Edvinas Pukšta, describes Stiekyt as “Hitchcock meets Almodóvar in a South African Drag club.”
The film’s cast includes: Paul du Toit, Illse Roos, Cintaine Schutte, Albert Pretorius, Wessel Pretorius, Jacques Bessenger, Roberto Kyle, Charlton George, Carla Smith, Frannie van der Walt, Llandi Beeslaar and Herman Lensing.
Stiekyt, produced by Homebrew Films for KykNET, will be available on DStv Box Office from 22 November 2022 to 31 January 2023 the year.
