Masks and lockdowns explored in Suidoosterfees and Breytenbach Galery art exhibition
The Suidoosterfees and Breytenbach Centre will present the art exhibition, Mas / Masker / Maskerade, in Wellington from 4 December 2021 to 20 January 2022. An opening event is scheduled for Saturday 4 December 11:00 at the Breytenbach Gallery.
Artists will explore the phenomenon of masks during the worldwide pandemic. Works in the exhibition are for sale, and were created by the following artists: Liza Grobler, Theresa Jo Wessels, Jan Barend Wolmarans, Rowland Daniëls, Louise Gelderblom, Rose Gelderblom, Konrad Ross, Alexander Laurean, Susan Smuts, Ann Pretorius, Diane McLean, Joubert Stander, Nadine Hansen, Jacques Dhont, Norman O’Flynn, Lindy Kriek, Neelan Naidoo, Desireé Malan, Susan Bloemhof and Kobus Coetzee.
During the Covid-19 pandemic “mask” became one of the most frequently used words by people all over the world. Themes like the wearing of masks, disguise, concealment, masquerading, safety, protection and freedom are explored in the exhibition.
According to Anne-Ghrett Erasmus, curator at the Breytenbach Gallery, many people, including artists, are grappling with the fallout of disruptions caused by restrictions due to the pandemic. “The pandemic sneaked up on the world’s population like a thief in the night. Today the world resembles the eery reality of a science fiction movie. With this in mind, we invited artists to creatively explore the absurdity that characterises lockdown measures.”
Admission to the exhibition and the opening event on 4 December at 11:00 is free. For enquiries, contact Anne-Ghrett Erasmus at 083 415 0002 or galery@breytenbachsentrum.co.za.
